working backup solution required - not seedvault

Hi,

I've just tried backing up with seedvault but it only backed up about 150 of my 250 apps. Gave reasons such as "no data found" for the app, even though it has data. I also didn't understand why it asks you to select personal data you want to save, but only gives you data type and not folders.

Anyway, bottom line is seedvault doesn't backup the whole phone/account which is what I wanted.

I don't think we can root gos, so what is a real world workable solution to backup/restore a whole gos phone?

lawman I could be remembering totally wrong, but you can try enabling device to device mode (not sure of the name) and I think it'll back up more data.

Edit: forgot to mention that the project does want to replace Seedvault at some point in the future. That or fork it and fix it so it's less terrible. You can see that it's mentioned even in the release notes. For example, see https://grapheneos.org/releases#2025041100

I use seedvault for everything that works with it (make sure the apps that show they are backed up really have everything backed up you need), ente for photos, protondrive for documents and the apps internal backup mechanisms for everything else.

It's more work to do than just setting seedvault to backup everything but it only takes me around 10mins each week so, while a fully functional backup solution would be nice to have, I don't really care.

Is there any other option as seedvault is pointless if only partial backups are possible.

Rooted backup probs won't work so completely stuck.

I think they've been taking about replacing seedvault for years so not viable atm

This makes me wonder how 200k+ users go about backing up their data since we don't really hear that many complaints. Probably okay with partial, manual backups.

It's just one of the downsides of using GOS: no backups worth the name.

Also when seedvault creates a 17gb backup from 150gb on phone, it's likely not backed up my photos or docs which are more than that.

Not just a GOS problem. If android allowed users to completely backup apps and data I probably would never have rooted a phone. More than once I've had to fall back to an old version of an app due to defects in new versions. Also, having a good backup had saved me a couple of time when LOS upgrade failed and I had to wipe the phone.
