Problems running Telnet apps - won't connect

I've used Telnet apps on this phone prior to having installed Graphene. Worked ok at the time.
I'm trying to get it to work now running under GrapheneOS, but the two apps I've tried won't connect.

The device I'm trying to connect to is online and I can use PuTTY on my Linux computer to get into it fine.
So I'm wondering if there's something about GOS that's preventing Telnet from working properly?

NVM. Disabled my VPN, connected ok. Still connects fine with the VPN re-enabled. It's like it needs to see a non-VPN connection first after thar it's good through the VPN.
