Google Account: Auto-Verification Pending

I'm getting things running on my new Pixel 9a and haven't been able to get RCS working in Google Messages (it worked on my old Pixel 6). In my trouble-shooting process, I visited my Google Account and for the phone found this under the Phone Number area:

Google Pixel 9a
Auto-verification is pending for this device. This may take a while

Will Auto-Verification EVER work on a GOS phone with sandboxed Google Play installed?

Never mind. Two hours after I posted the above, I got an unsolicited text saying "Your Messenger verification code is...." Without doing anything with it, I checked the RCS status in Google Messages and it was turned on (yay!). I also checked my Google Account and the pending auto-verification message was gone. So, it looks like GOS phones WILL auto-verify. And, it looks like that auto-verification is what RCS is dependent on in Messages.
