Lock screen turns off before I can enter the code

I am experiencing the following annoying issue on both my Pixel 6 and 8 Pro.
A lot of time when trying to enter the primary password, the screen dims twice and then turns off before I can fully enter the password. Touching the phone when the screen goes black gets me back to the locked state. I either have to be really quick (it's only 10 seconds) or retry and swipe around several time until the screen stops dimming while I input text as expected.
To be clear, the issue is that the screen dims as if the phone was inactive even though I am constantly touching the screen. This happens on Pixel 6 and 8 so I guess it is not phone specific.

I'm seeing a similar issue on a 6Pro after the number of failed 2-factor fingerprint attempts is exceeded, where the fingerprint isn't recognised. Authentication falls back to primary passphrase, as i'd expect. As i type, the characters show in the keyboard widget's magnifier lens, but theres no corresponding asterisks in the unlock text box & after ₁₀ secs the screensaver kicks in. Subsequent attempts to unlock the device have same behaviour. The only method i've found to unlock it is to reboot via the power button & then it'll accept the primary passphrase.

You have to tap in the text field before entering password. It's not actually typing and so times out and screen dims.
Only happens sometimes. Odd.
