Private Cloud Storage (Linux Friendly)

I've just reinstalled GrapheneOS after some years away and am amazed how far it's come. It's brilliant. I'm struggling though with a cloud storage option though - I used to use Mega, but it seems to have changed with some ads included and some quite heavy looking user agreement. Their paid options are quite oddly structured as well if I needed it. It works well on Linux but I'm looking for something else. Can anyone recommend anything? I'm not an international criminal mastermind, but I do keep a lot of financial/ personal documents that I don't want falling into the wrong hands, so it needs to be reliably secure. I don't want to go down the self hosting route particularly but do need occasional access while I'm AFK. I've been using Microsoft Onedrive (without issue tbf), but want to get away from them and a 'proper' Linux app would be nice.

Because it kinda sucks to move flash drives around + dealing with their random issues.
Also its not an offside backup.

AFAIK, Proton Drive has a Linux client and it's also E2EE.

Otherwise you could have a look at Cryptomator, which works with almost any provider and encrypts your files before uploading them so you don't have to trust the cloud provider in this regard.

Or maybe check out Syncthing which the files directly between your devices without involving a cloud at all. It has an official Linux client and there's Syncthing-fork for Android.

When they released the Linux client? I am a Linux user and have Proton Unlimited but to my knowleadge there is no Proton Drive Linux client.

Can you mount your cloud storage directly to the android file system with Cryptomator or do they at least have a good app, how is the using experience?

Unless I'm missing something huge, Proton Drive does not have a Linux client. You can, of course, access PD through a web browser. But an app that syncs folders, etc -- there isn't one on Linux. (This is the only thing that keeps me chained to Windows, unfortunately)

Yep. I'm already on Proton for mail and was using Pass, but there's no Linux client for Drive.

I use SyncThing to sync specific folders on two Linux machines, local network only, but the developer has stopped supporting the Android client. There is, however, a SyncThing fork, approved by the orig dev, that might suit you. I have had some issues with syncing to Android, but they may just be due to impatience ;-)

Anyone had any experience with pCloud? There privacy policy doesn't look appalling and you have a choice between EU and US servers.

Proton Drive is notorious for being slow and well, being an unfinished product. Syncthing is good but you need to have both devices on at the same time, it's fairly reliable

MEGA is well known for having encryption flaws that were not fully fixed

I use Nextcloud to store all of my personal files. It's sort of like Google Drive but you have total control - you host it yourself.

If you don't want to host it yourself there is hosted plans available at many VPS providers.

Maybe try Tresorit and Peergos? They both have reliable E2EE and have native clients on Linux, but both require a subscription.

You can use Storagebox from (hetzner) 1tb is just 3$ .
And enable Webdav then just use Cryptomator to encrypt . Or if your are familiar with command line, you can enable SSH in Storagebox interface and mount it via rclone crypt + systemd in Linux .

For cloud providor I also like Koofr, because of support of Rclone, Webdav . Also with native app for Linux .

I use filen.io and I've set it up for my in-laws to backup data from their laptops and smartphones, it has zero-knowledge encryption, a Linux client and quite sensible lifetime plans (you can easily get 50 GB for free by creating an account from a referral link for 20 GB and then doing 3 referrals for +30 GB and they have 100 GB lifetime plans for a single-time payment).

I heard of them before and playing with the thought of using them because they are very attractive with E2EE, Linux client and fair priced plans.
How is they overall user experience with them?
Do they have tags and/or a good searchinf function?

I like the user experience, you can set up various types of sync/backup options for individual directories on a desktop machine and you can set up photo backup on an Android client, no tags, search works within a selected directory.
