Unfortunately, I'm finding out more and more that a lot of normal, mainstream, apps just don't work with Graphene. Mostly they won't even install, and they will say they don't work with my device. This is frustrating because it means I can't actually sell my old phone. I still need it to access a lot of stuff. I'm having a little bit of installer's remorse here honestly.

And, also, the apps that do run seem to just randomly close. Gmail. Royal Road. Random games. Pipe Pipe. Restarting seems to help, but they just drop out with no message at all.

Yes they do and yes they will. What you're talking about here is a result of Google's monopolistic practices. Apps can be installed on GrapheneOS and the vast majority work without any issues. The ones that have issues can usually be made to work by enabling Exploit Protection Compatibility Mode.

This isn't normal. If you have developer options enabled, disable them. Or maybe you've changed system apps' permissions or disabled them? These kinds of things can result in the strange behavior you're describing.

TiggyTheTerrible all you can do is to contact the devs of that app and explain why they should put GrapheneOS on a whitelist.

Unfortunely, GrapheneOS is not certified by Google and some devs only allow their apps to run on certified devices.

This certification is a also a big joke.

GrapheneOS who is hardened and runs latest android release and security patch is automatically considered as insecure but an old android device is safe and secure to run even if was last updated 5 years ago because it's certified. Something is wrong right ?

I have no regrets to have GrapheneOS as my daily driver. I have more to lose by running stock OS than GrapheneOS.

You just need to learn better software to use instead of the ones that don't work.

For instance... fairemail or thunderbird (previously known as k9mail) instead of gmail.

secrec I use proton doe mail, but there isn't an alternative for banking apps or ebay.

area51 nothing about the ingerity api itself is a bad thing, its the fact GOS isn't covered by it.

Honestly, I wonder if Google themselves would be willing to hear out GOS, or if GOS is to 'informal' in an industry level for google to trust.

At least Android is open source and the Pixel devices allow the installation of a custom ROM, you couldn't build or even install a custom iOS version lol.
Yes, Google is not optimal, but at least we get the chance to have something like GrapheneOS

area51 this is unfounded conspiracy, even GOS has discussed how the API is used to check for outdated or untrustworthy operating systems. The issue is the method of trust has flaws.

Your UK bank insists on it because if they didn't they would be liable if your operating system was hacked and your bank drained. They would have to pay for the unauthorized transfer.

If Google wanted to gatekeep, they would just lock the devices bootloader and not allow for custom signing keys.
