Google Photos (Optimization?)

Is there any "optimization" happening once you're opening pictures in Google Photos?

We just tested taking the same picture on Phone 1 (Graphene OS but Pixel Camera) and Phone 2 (same phone but standard Pixel Android) and while I wouldn't say Phone 2's pictures look better, they definitely look different.

So I was wondering if Google Photos applies any optimization just by opening pictures in the app?
I'm guessing the GOS Gallery doesn't apply anything, so that can't be were the difference in looks is coming from :D

were these photos taken with Pixel Camera or the GOS camera?
did you check the photos on the respective screens? It might be possible that you have different color profiles (especially on stock PixelOS, even proprietary ones not available in AOSP) enabled. For best results, share photos between phones and compare them on the same screen.

Pictures were taken with Google Cam / Pixel Cam on both phones.
We send the pictures to each others phone to make sure it's not just the screen; meaning we didn't use a messenger but LocalSend (to be sure it's not LocalSend we also used our cloud).

I can't seem to find anything on the web about Google Photos applying any optimization, but I also can't find out for sure, that it's GCam / Pixel Cam that does the algorithm magic.

graphinand then that is the first time I'm hearing about something like this. Would you be willing to take a photo on both phones and upload them to something like Imgur so that we can compare? I'm pretty curious myself now.
