Question about safety when traveling

I understand that traveling out of or into the US they can search for phone.

My question is, what's the best practice for maintaining my privacy if they attempt to scan my device?

Should I be restarting my phone and leaving it on the lock screen if I have to let them scan it? Or should I put it in lockdown mode? Or should I just factory reset my device?

(I don't have anything illegal on my phone but it'd be nice if the US govt didn't get a copy of everything on my phone 🫶)

xarexyouxmadx this was discussed too many times already, do yourself a favor and use the search. But my advice:

Don't do anything 'sketchy', this will get you into more trouble.
If you can use a separate phone without any data on it, but don't overthink think this. You use the phone as a phone after all.
If you cannot use a separate phone and are worried about data on it, wipe it set it up from scratch as a phone without data. Again if you overthink this it will look sketchy and you may end up with more trouble than it's worth.
