No RCS Chats on Pixel 8?

So I have been using Google Messages on my relatively new Pixel 8 (both with no network access, and with network access) but with no account sign in. I have having issues with sending and receiving texts from folks with iphones (namely family). VZW is my carrier (unlocked phone via Best Buy).

In the settings in Messages, it says 'RCS chats aren't available for this device". Is there a solid work around yet? Grapheneos has been great past this issue.

I was having intermittent text issues with Calyxos on a 4A5G, with it being at EOL I decided to get a new device, and try out Grapheneos.

Any help would be appreciated on a real fix.

I think I got it figured out, was a permission issue with Google Play Services. Found a previous thread that (as of now) appears to have corrected the issue I had.

metalsped Would you be able to share what permissions you used and if you had to install any other Google app (carrier services, Google, etc.)

I too am on a pixel 8 with VZW and can't get RCS working.

I'd appreciate it.

Play Services had not been configured to allow Phone or SMS. Once I did that, the RCS chat box became clickable. Here is what I have set up now, that is working (I use Aurora store, but also just set up a burner gmail address for play store, should it ever be needed):

Was there any kind of delay in RCS starting to work? I'm in the process of configuring everything with GOS on my new PIxel 9a and have the same problem: "RCS chats aren't available for this device." The permissions contain all the one's you've specified (and more). Oddly, RCS worked without problem on my old Pixel 6.

And to confirm I am not signed into a google account for Messages to work (nor the play store or any other Google product... just having them on the phone seems to make them all work together).

And yes I do have Carrier Services installed. Permissions are Network, Phone, Sensors.

It was still greyed out when I realized that I hadn't given Play & Carrier services access to phone, which once I did it immediately showed up and started working. I can doublecheck my settings to confirm I didn't miss anything listed above, and report back.

RCS activated for me today. It looks like it was waiting for Google to auto-verify my phone (according to my Google Accounts page, it had been pending). I don't know if the auto-verify delay was normal for Google or if it was stuck because of something on my end. The only thing I did just before everything went through was force the Google Phone dialer to set up voicemail (prior to that, it said it wasn't available on my device).
