A few of my contacts are getting texts from my phone number. Its not me. They are responding to these texts. My phone is not showing any notifications that any of this is going on.
My phone will not allow me to place phone calls without a reset first....everyday! I do not have any apps on my phone other than the stock GOS apps. I have the attestation app enabled, the history shows nothing discernable.
Spoofed phone number?
Attestation application doesn't mean you don't have bad programs installed, it tells you only that the system hasn't been modified.
I've never heard of number spoofers using SMS, since replying to them obviously would just reply to YOU. Usually number spoofing is used for voice calls. These messages... what kind of data do they contain? URL's?
Since you say you only have the stock GOS applications installed on your phone, a factory reset shouldn't be too burdensome. That's the first thing I'd try to make sure that there isn't any malicious software stuck in there somewhere. So give that a go as a first step, if the malicious SMS messages don't stop, take it up with your service provider and see what they say about the messages. They should be able to pull up a log of messages sent from your phone, which will help you narrow down if your phone actually sent the messages.

Like I said, I have to do a reset to my phone everyday just to be able to make a phone call. I keep my phone turned off at night and in a faraday bag.
I've googled this. There is a current MITM attack which discusses this problem of messaging. The message content my contacts are getting is anger and accusations. It looks like I'm trying to start a argument.
I need to know how to stop this, obviously! I cannot find anything on line under this topic about how to stop.
I'm going to loose friends over this. So, I suppose I'm being "cancelled"?? Is this what it looks like??
RedHenry I've wondered if GOS has a solid satisfactory "factory reset" option.
Pretty solid. There are some reports that the Media DRM i.d. persists, but that is not yet 100% clear to me.
But if spoofed SMS messages are being sent from some other device then no amount of resetting an innocent uninvolved device can possibly help.
RedHenry I don't believe your story. Sounds like you're sending the messages yourself and attempting to find a scapegoat to blame the messages on. You've conveniently totally ignored my suggestion to talk to your service provider to obtain logs showing what messages you are actually sending.
You've also changed your story between the first and second post. First it was a reset, now its a factory reset? These are two different things. Reset (also known as reboot) is just powering it off and on again. Factory reset wipes all userdata irretrievably.
Also interesting how your story is evolving to add a faraday bag. If your phone is off in a faraday bag, but the messages are still being sent during the time interval when it CLEARLY cannot be communicating with the network, then you have IRREFUTABLE PROOF that the issue has NOTHING AT ALL to do with your phone. This is also totally incongruous with the need to do a reset or factory reset in order to make a call.
