Google maps scans the map when navigating

I'm having issues with google maps. sometimes, when I have it take me somehwere, it shows me where I'm at on the map. other times, it seems it's not sure where I'm at, and is scanning the map. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it the phone(hardware) or something else? I have the Pixel 9 Pro phone, and am on the latest updates for OS and the app.

There are places where their map is somewhat inaccurate, so the location via GPS will have you offroading somewhere near to the road instead of snapping you to the road. I can almost guarantee that the issue is in their MAP, and not in your location accuracy.

it happens about 1/3 of the time, which is more frequent than it should be. and some of the areas are very well known/populated.

cloudyskies993 it's likely that you're going in an area that has bad GNSS coverage. You can try enabling network location which helps with those areas by following https://grapheneos.org/usage#network-location

have you tried another map app such as organic maps or OsmAnd?
