Not so great feedback? Probably because nextcloud actually has a few real users, which owncloud doesn't. You're always going to have "not so great feedback" on self-hosted systems, primarily because of people who don't have the knowledge or competence to deal with it.
The only nextcloud account you need is the one you create ON YOUR OWN SERVER. If your server "calls home", it will just be checking for updates to notify you about. Feel free to disable that behavior if you don't like it.
