Hi everyone,
For my first post here, I wanted to share my experience with Google’s customer support, hoping it might help some of you. For context, I live in France.
I bought the Pixel 8a as soon as it was released from Google’s website since it was a better deal. Since I wanted to "de-Google" myself, I deleted my Google account right after the purchase.
Bad luck struck: after three months, I dropped my phone, and the screen broke. I contacted customer support, paid €150 for the repair, and within a week, my phone had traveled to Poland and back with a brand-new screen. However, there was an unpleasant surprise—Google had reinstalled the stock OS, even though USB-C was disabled.
Two months later, more bad luck: the back of the phone started coming off. I didn’t realize at first that the battery was swelling. Whether intentional or not, Google first tried to charge me just to glue the back cover back on. I had to insist for them to acknowledge the real issue. Since I no longer had my original Google account, they told me to recycle my phone and sent me a replacement.
Another surprise: the replacement was a refurbished unit. But under French consumer law, a replacement device must be identical, meaning brand-new. With a refurbished phone, I was also losing warranty coverage. What followed was weeks of frustrating back-and-forth, feeling like I was talking to an AI. In the end, I had to send a formal notice by registered mail to their European headquarters in Ireland to get a proper resolution—another week without a phone.
Bottom line:
Google’s support is not your friend. If you buy a Pixel on Google Store, create a dedicated Google account and keep it. Your GrapheneOS installation will be wiped, but this won’t void your warranty. And if Google has to cover the cost of repairs, be prepared to fight against their questionable policies.
