Network speed monitor in status bar.

Trying out GrapheneOS for the first time and the only feature I'm missing is a download/upload monitor in the status bar.

I appreciate the minimal and sandboxed philosophy and understand features require maintainers.

I live rural and hop around from different networks and areas and the network indicator is a quick and simple way for me to diagnose whether I have full, some, none, or throttled speed (sometimes even being stuck in roaming.)

Are there any solutions compatible with GrapheneOS? Any possibilities of this being baked in?

I'd be willing to learn how to compile it in myself for this one feature but this would likely interfere with automatic updates I'm assuming.

Duck0 This is something that's unlikely to be included in GrapheneOS if it's not part of AOSP.

I was able to find this app which you can configure to show your current network speed as a notification, maybe it helps:

Just sharing my two cents here. This too is one of the things I miss most on GrapheneOS. LineageOS has a whole section for status bar settings, including other simple things like "show seconds" on the top left clock. Not a big fan of installing more apps just for these features (my battery life is already trash because of so many apps lol).

Your suggested application does not have an option to display in the status bar and an issue in the repository the owner commented on suggests this is not a feature that will be implemented.

Which, while not exactly as configurable as I want, gives me the ability to see data transfer at a glance.

Any other recommendations are welcome.

Duck0 From my brief testing, the Data Monitor application I recommended gives you a notification, but yes, it doesn't seem to be in the status bar. The app you found seems much closer to what you'd like to achieve. :)

It would have been a really nice feature. It would help in identifying any inconsistencies with data usage in case an app misbehaves and prevent excessive data usage beforehand. An advantage of displaying network speed on the status bar: Unless you know some app is abusing data usage, you won't go looking for it.

Open it, find and select 'System UI'. Scroll to 'System UI demo mode'. Select 'Status bar'.
You can also make this a shortcut on homescreen to easily return and toggle this.

GrapheneOS is an AOSP variant focused on security and privacy, and delivers leading security and privacy. Other AOSP variants, such as LineageOS, are focused on other things, such as supporting many devices and supporting devices after vendor support ends. It seems unlikely that GrapheneOS will ship all of the convenience features of LineageOS, and unlikely that LineageOS will achieve the security and privacy of GrapheneOS.

It is possible for individual users who want some specific features to add them to GrapheneOS via apps, but it is not feasible to add security to LineageOS by installing apps. It seems likely that this situation will persist.
