Hey,
Yet another post about OEM greyed out..!
I'm starting to think I was a little bit too enthusiast about switching to Graphene OS... and innocent because I thought it would be easy haha
I didn't think that getting the device would be the most difficult part.

So, I just bought a new Pixel 7 on a well known french website (not a carrier) for installing GOS. The device is not carrier locked, for sure because my SIM works fine on it.
However, it is OEM locked, so far. OEM unlock toogle is grayed out in the developper options.

First time I turned it on, I was probably not careful enough, but it updated to Android 15. So I'm stuck withit now (don't know if it's good or bad for the OEM problem).

Since yesterday, I'm reading a lot about this issue and discovered that many people had it before. I tried all the tricks I could find: Factory reset, SIM connect, Google Play Services "checkin", fastboot commands etc.

Eventually, I am now waiting for "OEM unlock" to magically ungrey, as it apparently happened for some people. What are my chance? How long the wait? I read someone said that if unlockable, the option should ungrey within minutes; others said it took a random time to ungrey.

My questions are:

  1. is there a way be sure that my pixel is not "OEM unlock" forever, like with IMEI check or something? Should I wait or move on? I read here some people had to buy 4 different phones before getting a one that was OK

and 2. if I choose to buy a new one, say aPixel 8, from Google Store (and resell my Pixel 7): how can I be sure that the Pixel I will receive from Google Store will be OEM unlockable? Will it be right away? Obviously, I don't have the money to play the Pixel lottery more than one last time :)

Thank you for your feedbacks :)

bstn43624 I think if you put the serial number into Google's warranty tool it will tell you what flavor the device is.

Also I think if a Pixel is bought from the Google store as unlocked and it won't OEM unlock then they will take it back. Perhaps the reputable French retailer will as well?

de0u Thanks for your reply. I checked the imei on Google store repair page. It says that with this device, I have to reach the page called "warranty center". So I guess it means warranty already expired.. and that it was a scam. The device was sold as new and appear to be so when it was delivered.

So I will try to send it back to the seller and we'll see.

Thank you for your answer about the Google store option. On the French Google store, there's no "unlock" option in the purchase, no other option either by the way. So I guess it's supposed to be sold unlockable...

What did the warranty center page report?

They are all unlocked in your country from Google Store.

For your issue you do not need a sim card.

Basically, you need to just give the phone some network, you set up the phone, with or without Google account, go in dev option, and enable OEM unlocking.

If it doesn't work, try to update the OS, after the update+reboot, do a factory reset, set up the phone again, go in dev option, tick the oem unlock button and you are all good to go through GOS install.

French amazon, darty/fnac sell OEM unlockable pixels, if and only if they are sold by them. If it is from a third party they are no warranty it will be OEM unlockable. Avoid Cdiscount too they are garbage.

Hope you will find a suitable solution Cher ami
In any case if you cannot do the OEM unlock after that it can be an issue with phone not being genuinely new, or from another country.

de0u it is just a general page describing the warranty conditions depending on the coutry you are, but nothing on this page is related to your imei.

NetRunner88 OK, so discount it was. I tried all the solutions you mentioned but didn't work at all. I'm cooked.

I'll send the phone back, usually you have 2 weeks here to products return bought online. We'll see if it works (don't know the chances, here).

And next time, I'll buy the phone from one of the shop you mentioned :)

            Merci!
