notification sounds and customization - an improvement?

I am having some trouble with notification sounds.

Firstly, I know there is an issue with the default SMS sounds and its being fixed. Thanks devs.

However, I have gone through a couple of my apps looking to change which sound they use for notification and I've discovered they don't support such customization (e.g. K9 email client, Etar calendar). This is crap.

Would it not be easier for users to change the notifications sounds on a OS level?

In my mind, I imagine this as something like 'spoofing' the default notification sound. It would be a setting located in the settings > apps > notifications section.

Or is it already there and I am just being stupid?

I've been using Etar, K9 (formerly, now Thunderbird) with custom sound notification for almost 2 years.
Maybe I misunderstand your described problem.

Oggyo No, I found it, you're right.

I just didn't think to click on "messages" for options in settings for e.g. K9 notifications - it just looked like an on/off toggle.
