Cannot install .p12 or .key

I have generated a self-signed CA and client cert for EAP-TLS.
It was easy to install ca.crt, but client.p12 cannot be opened from the browser download tab, files app, or 'install wifi certificate' menu. client.p12 is greyed out in the file dialog interface and not selectable. Tried client.crt + client.key, and client.key is greyed out too.

Under what condition Files app disables opening .p12 or .key file? How can I install the client (user) credential?

The "request" to the Files app would likely have contained a form of file filter that specifies the MIME types for files that the user may select. So if it were looking for a "certificate", then it's not going to match a private key, nor a keystore / container.

Don't we need a private key for wifi certificate?
If I select client.crt, it toasts 'Private key required to install a certificate'.
If I open Files app from the home screen and open client.p12, it says Can't open file.

less your client certificate might be incomplete or have the wrong encoding. I was able to install a .p12 just fine, tested a minute ago. Certificate and CA was created by OPNSense.
Check with openssl x509 -text -in yourcert.p12 that it contains the certificate and public key.
