Default Messaging app notification sound settings not respected

Hi,
I submitted a bug about this to the issues page, but I am just curious if I am the only one experiencing this. When the notification sound for the default Messaging app is customized, that change is not respected for me and I still get the default notification sound when an SMS is received. Can anyone please report whether they have the same experience or not?

If the Messaging app happens to be open when an SMS arrives, then the customized notification sound is played; however, as you can imagine this is a rare situation. On the lock screen, or if the Messaging is not open, the default notification sound is played. This is a bit more than annoying because stratification of importance is not possible based on the sound anymore. I hope that it is resolved soon.

hakayova I'm having the same issue. I never know when I get a text until I look at my phone. This is new. Not sure what's causing it

Thank you @Smlvox for confirming. I was wondering if I was the only one experiencing this since I didn't see much people reporting/complaining about it. I believe there was a recent overhaul of GrapheneOS which caused this, I hope they can fix it soon since it is important to be able to differentiate what kind of notification you get based on the sound.

It's a known issue since the 2025012600 release that's being worked on. It was not reported until long after the release, and there was a public testing period for the Messaging app overhaul prior to being included in the OS where no issues with this were reported. There's an existing thread:

No, that's not related and is an app issue.

GrapheneOS Messaging version 6 has a complete overhaul of the notification implementation including support for notification channels, chat bubbles, quick replies, etc. It fixes the per-conversation configuration not being respected anymore for the notifications outside the app caused by the initial update of the target API level to 35 (Android 15). It's currently available in the Alpha and Beta channels of our App Store so you can switch Messaging to Beta or Alpha there via the menu to obtain the update fixing this and greatly improving the notifications beyond how they worked before.
