Unable to call 911

I tried to call 911 today using the Google "Phone" app but when I hit the green "Call" icon, it did nothing. I am able to call other numbers. At the time of the attempt, both the stock Phone and Vanadium apps were disabled in my settings. When I try to call 911 with the stock Phone app, it works.

kdath18391 While I can't say so with certainty, it sounds a lot like this issue someone had with Fossify Phone. You probably shouldn't disable system apps without knowing/investigating the consequences, as sometimes 3rd party apps aren't feature-complete replacements or can't even be so.

kdath18391 You can't disable the stock Phone app via the Settings app. You must have done it via ADB. Disabling system components via ADB is dangerous.

How about asking google why their app seems to be misbehaving? And aren't emergency calls generally supposed to go through standard phone calls?

Actually, you can.

Someone reported in the community chat rooms that the Messaging app can be disabled but only if a user-installed app is set as the default SMS app. This prompted me to check if the same is true for the stock Phone app, which it is: I installed a third-party app and set it as the default Phone app, and I was then allowed to disable the stock Phone app through the Settings UI, without having used adb at all. On GrapheneOS 2025021100, tested on Pixel 8.

In contrast, the stock Pixel OS does not allow users to disable the stock Phone app, even when it's not set as the default. I tested this just now, on Pixel OS with the Feb 2025 patch level (don't have the build number in front of me right now).

fid02 when you disable default Phone app, you can still receive incoming calls which are handled by by Phone Services and Phone Calls system apps. There are just no means to call back with dialer missing.

What would interest me is how to completely remove telephony while still be able to use the internet sim card provides. My default Messaging is already removed, just Phone services have been a pain in the heel since I can't stop incoming calls from coming through and disable notifications either without resorting to using ADB.

My concern is that disabling the stock Phone app through the Settings UI will cause emergency calling to stop functioning. It's not clear to me if that disables emergeny calling entirely (not clear if the OP used adb or the Settings UI), but if it does (and the evidence so far suggests that it might), that's concerning to me.

Yes, users should not disable system components, but ignorant users do that all the time for arbitrary reasons, and then make posts in this forum wondering why their device is chain-crashing or whatever. I suspect they are reading posts from various arbitrary websites made by hobbyist tinkerers, or vloggers who recommend disabling what they deem "unnecessary" stuff to make their device more "private". It's not going to stop happening.

kdath18391 Also when ever TESTING (In the US) to see if an emergency number works. One should ALWAYS use 211 In lieu of 911. If one works, the other will work as well.
