Consistent backup failure across different cell phone models

Hi all,
I have yet to complete a successful backup attempt on GrapheneOS after about 3 years of use. The backup process always fails by 30-50% mark. I recently upgraded my phone from Pixel 5a to 8a and set up the new phone from ground up manually. I was hoping that by doing so, I might get luckier with my backup attempt with the new phone; however, it still fails. Tried backing it up internally, to a USB drive and to Nextcloud with no avail. Am I the only one who experiences this? I am including my apps in the backup, since it is an important part of backing it up, at least for me. I haven't tried excluding that option, but to me, it kind of defeats the purpose. Any suggestion will be much appreciated!

hakayova its not just you. I don't think backups without super privileged access is possible hence it doesn't fully work as intended

Thank you, @Graphene1, it makes sense. I wish there was a solution for this. This is the weakest link in the GrapheneOS chain in my opinion.

It looks like one of your apps does the brick. There is a hard way to find oit which one...

DeletedUser143 You are probably correct. Perhaps the backup should spit out a log file if it fails (and succeeds)?

hakayova I do not know about logs, but you can try backuping after unchecking apps one by one and figuring oit which one is misbehavin'

So when you find out which app doesn't play well with Seedvault, what are you going to do, just stop using it and replace with another? The problem is in fact with the way you can't restrict your use of apps. Simple setup with apps that provide their own export or rely on cloud backup completely bypasses the need to use Seedvault and depending on how few apps you use can take minutes to complete.

In theory one could file an issue on the SeedVault issue tracker.

This morning, I got a notification from GrapheneOS stating that the backup was complete, but some apps were not backed up! When tapped on the Backup Status, it gave me a detailed list of which apps were successfully backed up, which didn't have any data to back up, and which failed to back up. That was nice! I looked for the setting on the backup page to see it there was any configuration for scheduling backups and couldn't see any. Therefore, I am not sure why the OS tried to back it up out of the blue, and succeeded for once! I didn't change any settings, so time will tell if I will get any further notifications in the future about this. I will be sure to update you all here. Fingers crossed!
