Most battery-efficient VPN

Hello,
I'm researching which VPN to set up to access my private servers. For my phone I don't want to be turning the VPN on and off all the time so I need something that drains as little battery as possible.

So far, WireGuard seems like the best option, but I've noticed that the Android app says "Go userspace backend". Is there a way to make it use the kernel backend on GrapheneOS (and other OSes too). It should be in the kernel since Android 12 and I'm guessing it would be faster and more battery-efficient.

Also, GrapheneOS supports IKEv2/IPsec VPNs. Do this have any major drawbacks?

Skalistan In my experience, the official wireguard app is really efficient to the point where you don't feel the difference between it being on or off.
