How can I deactivate 5G?

In previous versions of GOS there was a LTE only option. Now there is a 4G only and 5G (preferred) ?

Next to 2G ,3G etc.

What is the right setting i have selected 4G only from start.

GOS21606 I still have all 3 options (LTE, LTE only, 5G) on the newest build 2025010700.

GOS21606 4G only = LTE only, the term used depends on your country. Normally, you should have the following : LTE/4G only, 5G, LTE/4G, 3G, 2G.

You can use 4G Calling to improve voice call quality, I haven't noticed any difference between 5G and LTE/4G only.

It's not really more secure, the cellular network is not secure for the user and was not designed for this purpose, it only reduces the attack surface because your device only connects to LTE/4G towers and it's possible that in the future LTE/4G only will become 5G only when 5G coverage is sufficiently deployed and dominates 4G coverage, which should happen, Daniel talked about it in a discussion on Github, we'll see.

K8y We also have to assume that the user won't immediately understand why he's being disconnected if he finds himself in an area without LTE/4G reception, if GrapheneOS activates LTE/4G only by default, the user might assume that the problem lies with the operating system, which is the same reason why network switching and sensors are activated by default for new installations.

K8y Additional information : If you use Wifi calling while using a VPN, the Wifi call bypasses the VPN because the call via Wifi goes through an IPsec VPN tunnel, which doesn't make the call private and secure; it's designed to protect the network itself, not the user.

Currently, the only way to make a call privately and securely is to use an application like Signal, which supports end-to-end encrypted phone calls.

K8y The best thing for call quality is to turn on Wi-Fi calling and to let the phone choose between 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G depending on cellular coverage where you are.

The best thing for security is to turn off Wi-Fi calling, have no physical SIM or eSIM, and to turn the cellular modem off via airplane mode.

Xtreix Thank you for contributing to this discussion. Please, do you know or does anyone know how to make the phone work only with 4G, 3G, and 2G, on this order, depending on the availability, but never use 5G? I would like to literally deactivate the 5G antenna, as if the phone did not have one. Cut the connection between the hardware and the firmware/OS. and i cant seem to find this option on the Phone. Leaving LTE only would leave me without service as I go to places where there is only 2 and 3 G. Thank you.

Ugs The only option I see to achieve what you want is to use a phone that doesn't support 5g, for example, my old Pixel 4a can't use 5g, however, this will mean using an EOL (end of life) phone because all current and future Pixels will support 5g so it's not the best option at all, which brings us to LTE/4g only which is a better option, what you'd like, I suppose, is to be able to manually deactivate 5g and leave the others activated (activating 2g is really not advisable for security reasons) but this option is not available.
