5G vs 4G(LTE)

Hello,
I'm not above asking stupid questions. Is 4G LTE still better for voip/SMS than 5G? The reason I ask is that I have noticed a delay in SMS while using a 5G network as opposed to no issues with a 4G network. Perhaps this is purely coincidental, but hence my question.

rbb i stumbled on 5G too and have questions: is LTE more secure than 5g? I thaugt 5g is the best agaunst sting ray attacks and is overall the best choise today. But then i red that graphene supports lte only mode and i wonder why.

rbb You need to understand that these are two types of 5G connectivity, the NSA and the SA. The NSA (about 90% of "5G" in North America) makes the phone work in two standards simultaneously (voice and text over LTE, data transmission over 5G). If you don't have a VoNR setting, it's likely that your SMS messages, like your voice, are sent over the LTE. You can check it by enable via service menu NR-only mode (5G only).

Yes. But carrier WiFi calls & texts (a different thing) do not use the VPN tunnel.

I'm not sure what you mean by "non-data (cellular)".

WiFi calling/texting is when you have a SIM in your phone with a phone number. Someone calls that number. That call can (if the carrier supports it, and it is enabled for your phone) be routed by your mobile carrier to your phone via WiFi, even if you're not on any mobile network (or if you have a data-only mobile connection on another network).

That is different from a VOIP situation where you have a dedicated app on your device that communicates with a VOIP service.

Short rule of thumb: apps you install on your phone don't get to just bypass the VPN unless you explicitly allow that.

The cellular modem/firmware/baseband and other system apps are not subject to the same restrictions.

Forgive my poor choice of words. Suppose a data-only sim card with no carrier phone number. The voip calls and sms through a voip app still travels through the VPN tunnel if I understand correctly.
