I'm looking for a solution to an excessive amount of system temp files. Right now they're using 37 GB/128 GB of my storage. They persist through updates and restarts. How would I trigger a clean-up, or where are they located so I can delete them manually (if safe to do so)?
System temporary files not clearing
Zeuskabob I'm assuming you're referring to the values found in Settings > Storage
? If so, I personally think that the label "temporary system files" isn't very clear and can confuse people. A developer told me a while back that the value there is simply storage that doesn't fall under other categories.
This came up a while back and it turned out the people who were experiencing this problem just had other profiles with a lot of used storage. If you also have profiles with varying amounts of used storage, you can switch to those profiles and check again and you'll see the number changes. If you add up all of your profiles' used storage, except for the active one, and subtract that from the temp system files value, you'll find it's pretty reasonable.
These files for me are things like app data, caches specifically. I strongly assume one (or multiple) apps are causing this pile up. Go through your app list and look for apps with very large file sizes.
other8026 Ah, that's not as great.
I think I found what's causing it. I have a 90 GB folder of Tachiyomi downloads in *.cbz format. While 60 GB is categorized as "other", the remainder seems to be categorized as " temporary system files". Wonder why...
Zeuskabob It depends on what created it and if it's still installed. It might get reassigned to another category if the app creating it was fully removed without preserving data (the normal uninstall process unless an app requests leaving internal app data), and it wouldn't get assigned back to it when reinstalled.
I never saw Temporary System Files before and I only noticed that immediately after update to Android 15. For me (P7a) there was only a sytem alone with 10 GB. With my other P8 I immediately created a photo after installing the grapheneos and there was only a system of 12 GB and nothing more. Since then, update to Android 15 has been added to 10 GB. I am currently seeing 10 GB system and 10 GB Temporary System Files.
I don't know what that is or what is all about. What would that look like if you reinstalled again? Can someone confirm that?
