Should I go with the new fold or pro 9 xl? Coming from IPhone I don’t know a lot about pixel hardware but the idea of giant screen is pretty cool

I bought the Pixel 9 Pro XL, already had the 7 Pro and the 8 Pro and all are about the same size (the new 9 Pro XL has thinner bezels and an even brighter display).

The new Pixel 9 Pro XL has a better finish and feels as high-quality as an iPhone 14 Pro Max.
The buttons are not as wobbly and fragile as on the 7 Pro / 8 Pro.
This is probably also due to their flatter, wider shape.

I find foldable smartphones far too fragile and their displays are not made of glass but plastic.
This is naturally more susceptible to scratches.
And because these foldable smartphones all have very thin housing parts so that they are not much thicker than normal devices when folded, there is also no room for a large, thick battery.
So a large, energy-guzzling display and a standard-sized battery. Doesn't really go together.

Conclusion: I recommend the Pixel 9 Pro XL, that feels valuable and stable. I like it.

The giant screen is really cool. But you do have to baby it a bit, that inside screen isn't as durable as a normal phone. I wouldn't get a used one either. You don't know how it's been treated. And screen replacement costs are a nightmare.

My first GOS Pixel was just a regular model. This year I went with the XL and I'm a big fan. A friend of mine took the small pro over the flip and they regret not getting the XL.

Picking a good case further makes the XL easily manageable. One thing I've heard time and time again is the novelty of the fold wears off quick. I'm personally unsure of the longevity of fold phones still, but they certainly are neat.

I was part of the iPhone converts years ago as well, for whatever that's worth. But your phone is your choice

Fair. In hand the XL is just comfortable. I'd imagine the same if you're using a Max. With the extra thickness of the fold, I'd think that one would just feel bulbous and almost awkward.

I debated trying a magsafe case but I thought even the mini wallet would make the XL a bit awkward to hold so I avoided that.

I have the 9 Pro Fold and don't know how I could ever go back to a non foldable. I find myself using the inner screen most of the time. Not because the outer screen is awkward or too skinny or less usable than a non foldable, but because the unfolded experience is THAT good. I haven't noticed any scratches or unusual fragility. My phone is cased and handled the same way I would handle a non foldable.

How great that we are all sporting GrapheneOS under the hood. From now a proud owner of Pixel 9 Pro XL. I still love my 6a too though and now own an 8a also. Who would have thought that running away from Google I would have landed 3 Google devices, all great in their own right? Note: No Google Play Services used for the purpose of this presentation...

I was itching to upgrade to a 9 Pro XL but honestly after comparing my Pixel 7 next to a 9 Pro XL can't really say its a huge upgrade. The 7 screen size is almost the sweet spot. Not too big, not too small.

I don't know if the AI features in the 9 series makes any difference if ur running GOS.

I may just hold on to my P7 until support ends then I'll have a valid reason to upgrade.

I played a bit with the Fold in store, cool tech but I don't trust the durability of that screen. Plus its a lot chunkier.

Frostily7047 judging product by its look or packaging is deceiving and rarely pays off. The biggest changes happen under the hood.

Frostily7047 I had the Pixel 7 before upgrading. It's a great phone and I still use it for music and podcasts when I'm doing yard work or home construction projects, somewhat because I also question the durability of the Fold, but mostly because I've always done it with any new phone. My pixel 6a had the same job when I first got my Pixel 7.

That said, display out, MTE, beefier processor, more memory, etc. are important to me. This thing absolutely flies. I've also almost entirely replace my windows machine with this phone. Most common tasks are done with a keyboard and mouse on the inner screen. Once external screen desktop mode is ready for primetime, I anticipate this to be my only device for home use.
