emilycestmoi I've been using WhatsApp for a year or so without issue on GrapheneOS. Recently I purchased a new phone number. Adding that account to WhatsApp was blocked and I got the "You need the official WhatsApp to log in" error message. (https://appuals.com/you-need-the-official-whatsapp-to-log-in-error/). I presume this is because WhatsApp is detecting that the app is running on GrapheneOS and now blocking new accounts. Does anyone know of a workaround for this or am I out of luck? Do not really want to get into rooting etc, would prefer to stay stock.
DeletedUser69 emilycestmoi Whatsapp has multiple updates every year, how did you keep your app up to date? What was the source of original installation? I wouldn't jump into conclusions not knowing all important facts.
DeletedUser242 emilycestmoi i'm on whatsapp v2.24.24.79 and have 2 accounts/numbers connected within the app since the add account feature was introduced. trust you have enabled necessary permissions in settings.
DeletedUser88 emilycestmoi Where did you install WhatsApp from? Their website, the Play Store or elsewhere?
emilycestmoi locked Did you add a new number after updating? My old number that I had in Whatsapp still works, the issue only shows up when adding my new number.
emilycestmoi DeletedUser88 Installed from the Play Store. It could be that my number was also flagged at some point as a number that was using a third party client--I'm not sure. I just got the number so I don't know its history.
emilycestmoi DeletedUser242 when did you add your last account/new phone number? I only see the issue when trying to add my new number now, I can still use my old number without issue.
DeletedUser242 emilycestmoi oh probably little over a year ago when the feature was first introduced. btw are you trying to add the new sim under add account? if i'm not mistaken, you need to activate the new sim via regular whatsapp setup (on a secondary device) before adding it as a new account. let me know how it goes. if not I'll try to remove/add the secondary number and see if I can replicate the issue.
DeletedUser622 Yesterday I tried to register Whatsapp on my second GOS device with another number, got "we couldn't send you SMS". Owner profile without Goolag services, tried 2 phone numbers.
DeletedUser370 emilycestmoi Can't reproduce. I installed WhatsApp from Play Store and proceeded to register a new account without any issues.
DeletedUser88 emilycestmoi Try adding the number to another device first, then add it on your GrapheneOS device. If it still doesn't work then it's probably an issue with the number. Contact WhatsApp support in that case and explain it is a new number and is likely blocked.
DeletedUser88 DeletedUser370 have you tried the "add account" feature compared to just registering a new account?
DeletedUser370 DeletedUser88 have you tried the "add account" feature compared to just registering a new account? But that feature is only visible if you're already registered and signed in? Anyone in this thread has got two phone numbers?
emilycestmoi DeletedUser69 Both change number and add account with my new phone number both give the same error "need official whatsapp"
emilycestmoi DeletedUser88 Yes I tried on an old Samsung phone with default Android, I am able to add my new phone number without the error. I did contact WhatsApp support, I'll post their reply here, essentially they are telling me that "Custom ROMs" are not supported.
