private maps timeline

Hey there!
As the title suggests I am trying to find a more private alternative to the maps timeline. More often than I would like to admit it was very helpful for me to check where I have been and when. So I enabled the timeline. Very bad, I know.
As I am installing Graphene OS as we speak I'd like to go ahead and ditch the timeline as well.

Do you know of any more private way to track your location regularly? Maybe even logging it only on the device?

Quick Google search shows people are liking OwnTracks, it's available on f-droid and stores everything on device.

I have a habit of taking a picture if I want to save a location. Then explore them in Ente.
On remote hikes, I compromise for safety and I track with Garmin.

For me the automated logging with time stamps comes in handy. So taking Photos is not an option unfortunately.
Owntracks looks very promising though! I wonder how I didn't find that myself when searching.
