Play store anon login question

It's been months since I've installed a new app into any profile and my brain is completely shorting out now. So, excuse the basic question.

I had thought that I was able to download apps from the Play Store, logging in with the anonymous account (for lack of a better word) w/out signing in using my own credentials. But now, every time I try to access the Play Store, it's requiring me to sign in and checking my phone for info. Am I trippin? Was I not able to sign in to the play store anonymously to download apps? Or was this only the Aurora store?

Rando10 Google enforces signing in with an account for the Play Store. You are thinking about Aurora Store.

You can download app updates from play store without log in, but only system apps. So this functionality isn't very useful on GrapheneOS.
