USB charger causes powered-off Pixel 7 to boot up automatically, almost bricked

Hi,

I have frequently noticed that my turned off phone powers on automatically when I connect a usb charger, even when the battery is fully depleted.

This situation almost caused my empty phone to become inoperable after an update, as it initiated the app optimization process and then shut down due to inadequate power from the USB charger. ( I did not use a fast-charging PD charger) .

This led to a boot loop, but fortunately, the device was able to recover after a few restarts.

How can I prevent my powered-off phone from turning on automatically when I plug in a USB charger?

Maybe its a good idea to prevent the app optimization when the battery is too low, or at least give a warning?

Does tapping the power button on the yellow "booting another OS" screen, when it offers the option to pause booting, pause booting? If so, that can be used to charge the device.

If the battery is frequently fully depleted, that may over time damage the battery and reduce its capacity.

Yes, it does. Occasionally I forget to use it. My battery only rarely fully depletes, when I forgot to charge it. All my other smartphones before never automatically booted when being connected to a usb charger. Is this a Pixel or GrapheneOS thing?

I don't know for sure. What I think is happening is that the device remembers whether it was supposed to be running or stopped, and when it gets power it tries to run if it thinks it's supposed to. I believe it is Pixel firmware.

I also have a Pixel 7, running GOS 2024112700. When connecting to a USB-charger I shortly get a charging screen showing the battery percentage and loading confirmation and that's it. If I want to boot the device, I have to power it on manually.

As a workaround for this unwanted behaviour you could enable the system update option "Require battery above warning level" .

My Pixel 6a doesn’t do it but my 7 pro does. Super annoying. I wanted to turn off my 7 pro to charge at night but it just powers back on.
