I just learned that Organic Maps doesn't talk without the aid of a special program. RH Voice was recommended, so I installed it, but I'm still getting the silent treatment. Is there some setting I'm missing that would make it work properly?

Thanks.

SteveS You need to install and enable a text-to-speech app in the OS settings for text-to-speech. In the text-to-speech settings, you need to select the app you installed despite it showing up as selected already if it's the only option in order to approve it being a TTS app. The UI for this is bad because the stock OS has a TTS app already included and activated. Google's speech services are what gets used on the stock OS since it's bundled with it and enabled by default.

The app needs to be configured in order to work properly which often means choosing the language files to download. eSpeak-NG and RHVoice are the main open source options we know about.

I'm using Sherpa (https://github.com/k2-fsa/sherpa-onnx) and is working, but the problem of both options is you ened to configure properly the speech engine at android settings: android settings -> accessibility -> text to speech (last entry) then click into your text to speech option to enable it (even if is the only one you have and it's already checked)

yes, once. Internet access can then be withdrawn

I am a real advocate of FLOSS software.
I also want to eliminate GAFAM from my life as much as possible.
But after the years in which I have been intensively involved with the matter, I have to say (and yes, I am a pragmatic person) that google is “unbeaten” in one place or another.
    For me, this includes
    Keyboard
    Navigation / Map
    TTS
    (camera)
It simply works best with this. Privacy or not.
Of course, in the end everyone has to decide for themselves.

Thank you for the advice. I did go into the settings and found the text-to-speech. RH Voice seems to be already selected, but I selected it again and it still isn't talking. I feel like I'm missing something here.

SteveS When you re-selected it, did you have to agree to a disclaimer?

On the previous screen, is there a "Play" button? Does pressing it result in speech?

SteveS You have to open the app and set it up since it doesn't automatically configure itself, unlike some of the other options. Go into the app and make sure it works. Go into text to speech settings and make sure it works when the OS uses it.

GrapheneOS changed the title to Organic Maps giving me the Silent treatment. .

Yes, de0u. There is a disclaimer and I did agree to it. And yes, when I open RH Voice, first I choose the language, then there is a screen offering three voices to download. I've downloaded all three. I don't know where I choose which one I prefer, though. In any case, no voice pipes up.

HE TALKS! (And what a lovely voice he has!) I don't know what changed for him. I reinstalled a couple of maps, but I don't see why that should matter. Other than that, I didn't really do much of anything. I will tell you that I drove almost half a mile before he said anything.
