Recent Apps does not default to current app

I always like to close an app when I'm done with it by removing it from the "recent apps" list that appears when you select the square button from the 3-button navigation. With GrapheneOS, when I go to recent apps, it always defaults to the previous app, not the one I was just looking at. Is there any way to change it to default to the most recent app? This is how it worked my previous Android phone, and I'm constantly closing the wrong app because of this.

aLlama each OEM implements or can implement their own recents menu, I know OnePlus Oxygen OS did. You are aware that doible tapping the square recents button will keep alternating between last 2 used apps on the recents right?

MetropleX So you're saying it's probably built into the phone that way, and I can't change it? I guess I didn't know about the double tapping, but it doesn't really help for how I normally use the recent screens.

aLlama not baked into the phone but the OS and the recents handling comes from AOSP that way and is the same on Pixel devices. Think I might have a Moto floating around I can look at to see the difference to better understand what you mean.
