GrapheneOS for the new Pixel Laptop?

If Google does indeed release a new Pixel laptop, is there perhaps a small chance that there will be a GOS version for it (assuming they meet the requirements)?

skalavagr it will be Pixel only in the name and its hardware will be not remotely similar with current recommended GrapheneOS devices. Not to shoot down your hopes, but I am very doubtful.

What I am hoping for is that the desktop mode used with latest Pixel range will improve and make them potent candidates for desktop replacement.

How do you know that? It's all just rumors at this point. What's preventing the next Pixel laptop from having a Tensor SoC, a Titan M2+ security chip, etc to compete with the M-series Macs? We don't know yet.

kopolee11 the rumor is it will either run ChromeOS or Win 11 but as our lovely friend above says, we won't know until it happens. I am just being healthily sceptical.

DeletedUser69 this is not what I read. The reports in AndroidAuthority, AndroidCentral, XDA, Notebookcheck etc. all state that it will likely run Android instead of ChromeOS.

But as mentioned, it's all rumors. It could be indeed the plan right now to ship a laptop with Android and simultaneously release a proper desktop mode for Pixel 8 and newer. But the plan has to not be changed, then put into action, then maintained and not canceled shortly after.

Going by Google's track record, I wouldn't get too excited (although I'd be among the first to get a GOS laptop for sure).

With all the ongoing work Google is doing in Android improving support and functionality for keyboards, pointing devices, external displays, desktop chromium for android, VMs running desktop linux, etc. the desktop like experience is set to continue improving for some time.

Its looking like there will be a tablet with keyboard that connects via pogo pins at some point, theres the possibility to use phones connected to external display, keyboard and mouse and theres informed speculation that this laptop may also run Android.

Google have never dropped maintenance once a device was released. They have always upheld the full duration they guaranteed.

I highly doubt it will run Windows. Like, Google makes ChromeOS for a reason?

As they want to merge ChromeOS with Android (no idea how that should work) this sounds like a new Pixelbook?

Not sure why they would call it "laptop".

The desktop mode tbh is not the thing preventing good use as a desktop OS. It is the app ecosystem, great for messaging, media and content consumption, bad for creation of pretty much anything.

Yeah, Google has been talking about this since at least 2014. I guess they didn't have a clear idea either. We'll see.

If it runs Android and meets our hardware requirements (https://grapheneos.org/faq#future-devices), it can be supported and we would want to support it. That doesn't mean it would be a particular good experience unless everything required for the form factor is available in the Android Open Source Project. We also still need to take better advantage of virtualization support to support running desktop Linux and Windows applications in virtual machines which would be important for making good use of a laptop form factor.
