Horrible storage/network performance on Pixel 7

Hi,

I've installed GrapheneOS approx. a month ago on my Pixel 7 and although I initially loved it, after some days, I experienced strange network and storage performance problems:

almost all apps with network permissions are really slow when downloading information
my gallery app is struggling with loading photos and their folders
picture downloads (e.g. from the browser) are taking more than 10 minutes in total for small images
my notes all (Markor) needs approx. one minute to load a bunch of tiny txt files
Syncthing really struggles with up- and download speeds, with LineageOS, I regularly had speeds around 40 MB/s, with Graphene, If I'm lucky, I get 0,5 MB/s

Before flashing Graphene, I wiped my phone completely (had LineageOS on it before), flashed the latest Google Stock rom, applied all system and firmware updates via OTA and afterwards flashed Graphene.

Is there anyone else with these kinds of problems? It really makes me want to go back to Lineage (which I do not want), but the phone is not really useful this way.

Wurzelmann Does this happen on all networks, or only specific ones? Do you have a VPN? Do you have developer options enabled, and have you made any changes to anything there? If so, do you still have issues if you disable developer options?

What happens if you reset network settings from the owner profile in Settings > System > Reset options?

other8026 happens on all networks (4G, 3G, 2,4 GHz wifi and 5 GHz wifi), no VPNs, no.

I did not enable developer options, because I saw no need for it yet.

Thanks for the suggestion with resetting network settings, but I tried that already a few times.

I have tried everything I could think of and I'm quite experienced with custom ROMs on multiple devices, but this was a first for me. :-/

I have a Pixel 7 myself, but I do not have these issues, therefore this issue is not present on all Pixel 7's.

Pocketstar thanks for the input. That begs the questions: what went wrong? The flashing was okay and afterwards, I did not do anything unusual setting- or otherwise. Maybe a fresh flashing will fix this, but if not, it's setting up a new phone all over again... :-/

Perhaps you can try to reset Bluetooth, WiFi and mobile connections under settings->system->reset options. (After that you do have to reconnect all network connections)
It can also be an external problem, did you try to turn off mac-randomization? Perhaps the accespoint handles it poorly.
If all else fails, as a last resort you can try a factory reset, and then try to connect to the internet before installing anything else or changing any settings to see of the speed is fine on a fresh install, that would rule out alot.

At home, I do not use mac randomization, but I am confident it would not change anything, worked fine before like this.

the problem is, that the network problems are mostly app-based, a speedtest gives me the full bandwidth my wifi/my modem can handle and the same with iperf3 in my home network.

You say that the same problem exists in all networks.
Have you used a speed test (fast.com) to check whether the bandwidth is almost equally crappy on all networks?
It would be interesting to see what the results are

Yes, I did and the performance there is flawless. Does not matter if I use external speedtest like you said or iperf3 in my internal network, the speeds are the saturated bandwidths my AP/modem can handle.

I created a second profile for isolated Google Play services, but the problems were there before that and I have not used the second profile since its creation, so yes, all in one profile.

EDIT: and no firewall, sorry, forgot.

I would do a clean reinstall and give it another try, before switching back to LOS.

Okay, I think I'll try that then. Thank you everyone for your input and help, I'll update here when I have news.

Update: I reset my network settings again and also reset all app preferences including system apps and now things are a little better, performance is noticeably better now.

Very strange, but I am glad to hear the issue you had before is less prevalent now,
My knowledge on networking is not very solid so I'm afraid this is as much help I can offer on the subject, but I hope you, or the other users on the forum are able to shed some light on the root of the problem.

It really seems like this fixed both problems or at least made it way better. The device feels snappy and fast again, things are working way better now. No idea why it behaved like this in the first place, but I am happy it's better now.

Update: performance started to suck again after a few days, but the thing that really fixed it for me was deleting the second user profile, which I created exclusively for sandboxed Google Play Services. I did never use it, deleted it and afterwards, the performance was noticeably better and stayed the way.
