Alright, just now read the petition. I think it's hilarious.
The petitioner also highlights the potential for job creation in the IT sector through this initiative.
Like they can't be serious. Europe has over the last few decades failed miserably to establish any foothold in the tech sector. Especially in non-industrial or medical appliances. Philips got split up and sold off mostly, Siemens does no consumer-facing tech anymore, Nokia is a shadow of its former self. All the tech giants missed a million opportunities to become a viable counterpart to the US tech monopoly. Who actually believes that it's going to change now? All the best tech minds got hired by US megacorps, which happens around the globe. A "creation of new jobs" will end the same way it always has: low wages and brain drain after a few years. By that time they'll call it a failed project and scrap it.
The idea of a European this and that is admirable, but foolish. The Chinese and Russians (fwiw) started to develop their own ecosystems decades ago, still aren't even close to replacing US tech and those are countries that "get things done". Is Europe/EU seriously trying now? With the usual pace they'll get there by the year 2070. I'm not even going to touch on the subject of replacing current infrastructure (Azure, MS365, Google Workspace, etc.), that will take decades.
All in all, very amusing. I wish them the best of luck in their endeavours. I personally will believe it when I see it.
