System_server has crashed on loop

I got a pixel 8 pro running latest stable channel. crashed once to the graphene loading screen this morning and was fine for a few hours. i updated gmscompact maybe an hour before and while im getting into my car i keep hearing my phone going off every 20-30 sec i finally check it after getting the kid situated and the phone is essentially running for 30 secs or so and crashing back to graphene loading screen on loop. i cant even manage to report the codes as it freezes and then crashes, you get maybe 15 secs of actual use before its frozen and back to square one. unsure if anyone else has experienced this? Any advice is appreciated.

UnknownSensei try booting the device in safe mode first to see if the problem is present there.
To do that, turn the phone off, then press the power button and after it vibrates, let go of the power button and keep holding the volume down button until it boots completely.

UnknownSensei The good news is that doesn't immediately look like a hardware failure (if it keeps crashing with basically the same crash dump).

The bad news is that something unusual is going very wrong.

If you are willing to completely wipe all user data, I suspect a "factory reset" via Recovery would likely get you back in business. But it is probably best to wait until you get a more-expert opinion than mine, if you can.

de0u That is sort of my hopes aswell. with how it played out im remaining hopeful. i sadly am a while out of back up and hoping to recover some newer data still. the failed to allocate concerns me regardless lol. it seemed to be the same and im unsure it took me like 5-10 mins to get those screen shots usually it crashes before it can even load the error. do you know if there is better channels to go to at this point too?

interesting. I am not a developer, but from the logs it seems like an OutOfMemoryError, not too uncommon on Android. I can't tell you which app/component is causing this, maybe someone from the project will chime in to help you.
Edit: you can also try a hard reset, maybe that will wipe some cache. To do that, hold all three buttons (power, volume up, volume down) for around 20 seconds until the device shuts off. It will then start by itself after a few seconds. The hard reset only simulates a battery disconnect.

I am also not an Android developer, but it's not clear to me SystemServer should have allocated half a gigabyte and still be coming up skint.

well bite the bullet. after messing around trying to figure something out i wound up stuck in rescue mode. could not even boot into graphene anymore. reverted back to stock android and will fresh install graphene. for some reason trying to download the release is taking forever.

This may be fixed by https://github.com/GrapheneOS/platform_frameworks_base/pull/57 in our next release. We backported an upstream fix for a locking bug.
