Data usage and vpn

So I use ProtonVPN as an always on VPN. While looking at my app data usage, according to my phone and carrier, I see

1 Gib Vanadium
.98 Gib App XYZ
659 MiB Always on VPN

Since I have an always on VPN, should it not always have the highest data usage? How is Vanadium or app XYZ able to use more data?

Standardwaste I think when this app data usage is populated, it does not overlap. Data used by the VPN app is used by the app itself and not anything else. Does this make sense?
