Trouble with USB-C port / Linux

The setup is as follows
GrapheneOS 2024102400 on a Pixel 6a, Gentoo Linux (updated daily).

Settings: USB-C port set to "On".

Trying to connect the phone to the Linux box results in simply "noting":
The phone starts charging and Linux does see any additional device under /dev/.

"USB controlled by" shows "this device" - everything else is grayed out.
"Charge connected device" is off.

The USB cable works fine with other devices.

What did I miss?

Try a restart while USB-C port is set to On, and see if it starts working again if a reboot was done while USB-C was unrestricted.

Then try a restart while USB-C is set to Charging-only, and see if the toggle refuses to work after that restart.

Oh, nice catch, Ammako! Yes, multiple people have reported that if USB-C settings have been changed, a full restart needs to be done before data starts working again. Might this be the issue?
