For some time now, the idea has been to add a local database to GrapheneOS so that network-based location services can also be private. Currently, only GPS is private, while network-based location services (Wifi/BT scanning) require Google to provide the location information after submitting the nearby Wifi/BT device information.
Thus, network-based location is currently not enabled by default and is not private. If GrapheneOS would use a local database to allow to cut out Google for providing information, it would also be possible to get network-based location privately.
This would be an amazing feature because you could simply say that all location on GrapheneOS is private. Also, network-based location uses less battery than GPS. What's the status of this idea?
Thanks!
