HotSpot instantly turns off

Strange behavior with new version of GrapheneOS.
I am in Qatar, roaming.
My HotSpot toggle instantly turns off.
I have used right here HotSpot many times, as recently as 6 months ago.

Now it will NOT turn on. Instant slide back. My Sim is still American and T-Mobile.

Funny enough I can use USB Tethering, but not HotSpot.
I don't like this control from carrier on my device.

Can this bug or control be removed? Or is it an upstream AOSP and Google issue?

Please help. (I have rebooted, clear network settings, everything). If I take the sim out, reboot the phone, I can turn on hotspot. As soon as the sim goes in, boom off.

Help please.

ToddCrimson Which version of GrapheneOS, on which device? Which frequency bands is the hotspot set to use (see "Speed & compatibility" in the hotspot settings)? Maybe try 2.4 GHz only?

It sounds like an issue caused by per-country Wi-Fi regulations. In general, the country is detected via cellular. A carrier disabling tethering is not supported by GrapheneOS and would disable USB and Bluetooth tethering too, not only Wi-Fi.

GrapheneOS yep, that's what I thought, but hotspot is getting disabled. I was on a 12 hour flight. Using plane's WiFi and then had hotspot on all the way in plane to use my laptop.

Only started happening here on Qatar as soon as I went on Roaming

de0u I'm on Pixel 8 Pro with the latest 2024101700. Yep, USB is working. And those settings for 2.4 VS 5 etc are not showing. Only extended compatibility. They were there before. But I have tried turning on compatibility mode and then hot spot toggle. No luck

If it is the current alpha, there have been other reports of the Wifi subsystem crashing when enabling hotspot. And only disabling it and then rebooting the phone restores Wifi. IIRC.

ryrona so rebooting now 3 times, same ... Hot spot just won't turn on. See above the behavior with SIM in or out.

Update: I am now in London, roaming and Hotspot is working perfectly. Definitely something in Qatar made my GrapheneOS stop allowing me to use Hotspot.

FYI: I took the sim out of my Pixel Graphene device and put it inside my OnePlus 9 Pro, running LineageOS. It allowed me to turn on my hotspot, no issues and allowed me to use it too in Qatar.

Please requesting the Devs to do more investigation on this, as this shouldn't happen.

It may be productive to file an issue on the GrapheneOS issue tracker. Please include all details in this thread so far, and a link to this thread, and any other details you can think of (e.g., which Qatari carrier you think your phone was registering with). If the project can arrange for an agent on the ground in the future (this is actually plausible), it may be feasible to reproduce the problem and get detailed logs.

Hi, I have exactly the same issue, I am in Qatar and using Pixel 9 running Graphene os latest Android 15.

I live in Qatar and I use Ooredoo eSIM, I can't enable the hotspot but the USB tethering is working fine, I bought this phone from the UK and I didn't have an issue with enabling the hotspot when I was there.

Hotspot worked with me on all my previous Android phones here in Qatar running on Ooredoo or Vodafone networks.

So I don't think that T-Mobile had anything to do with disabling the hotspot because of roaming, because I am not.

I'll try adding another eSIM from Vodafone and see what will happen.
