Can't send images with default Messages app

I upgraded from a 4a to an 8a, GOS on both. Messages on the 4a would share images (memes), 8a doesn't. Other message apps are hit or miss, and I haven't found one I like anyway. Any ideas why it worked on the 4a but not the 8a?

OldGuy Have your tariff settings changed as some networks classify pictures as MMS and charge extra, which you might have turned off. Due to charges some might have receiving MMS turned off. I certainly do, and therefore you might not be permitted to send

Tariff/provider hasn't changed. I took the sim out of the 4a and inserted it into the 8a. Provider is Red Pocket, been satisfied for about a year now.

I wasn't clear in my original post. I can send images if they are saved on my phone, or captured by the camera. I can't share images from Opera through the default Messages app on the 8a, something I could do on the 4a.

I have a faint sense that over time the default Messaging app has been accepting fewer MIME types / file types. Maybe the Messaging app on the 4a, or some inter-app glue, was frozen due to being Android 13? But this is basically a random guess.

I couldn't send webp since 'a long time'. JPG always worked, so I would sometimes save and convert a webp. And I specifically made sure the new images that didn't work were JPG.
