updating manually installed apps with google play store

I have installed all my apps manually on GrapheneOS so far. But recently I needed to install Google Play for specific apps. Now Google Play shows my manually installed apps like Firefox or WhatsApp and offers to update those.

Now my question is: Is this advised at all? Or will updating through Google Play break something? Can I loose user data like open tabs in Firefox or chats in WhatsApp?

user63455 it shouldn't be a problem. You'll be prompted to allow Google Play to update the apps the first time. After that, it will be able to update most apps automatically.

ok, so I tried updating two apps: Element chat and Mattermost chat. Play Store isn't able to update Element but was able to update Mattermost.
It is probably because I downloaded Element apk from F-Droid and Mattermost apk from Github before.

The FDroid version of Element would be signed with different keys (FDroid's) than the GPlay version. The mismatch would be detected and therefore reject the update. Reinstall Element from GPlay.

Dumdum I would've guessed that the github release of an app and the version available in GPlay would differ as well, but I'm not knowledgeable about these kind of things.
In the future I will probably reinstall apps from GPlay.
