Thoughts on F-Droid for FOSS apps

I see a lot of people using different app stores like obtanium etc, this begs the question; which app store is generally recommended here in terms of safety etc when looking for FOSS apps?

Im fine with F-Droid and as I understands it the people behind F-Droid check the code og each app and update before its realeased. I also like the listing of permissions and antifeatures. I do however missing listing of number of total downloads per app so it can give an indication of how solid the app might be.

technically I believe obtanium is not an app store. i call it a installer where you can add github repos and it will pull the apk for you.
this way you get the latest version f-droid does not always have the latest version for the same reasons you mention.
imho nothing beat getting app from their source whether is codeberg, gitlab or github.

Honestly, it doesn't matter for the general "privacy" user I dont think.
I've noticed some apps update faster via Fdroid repos (they maybe 3rd party but show up in Droidify for example), the advantage is you get it from the source, but that could introduce risks if the dev went rogue or their github was compromised.

The most secure way is either Play store or Accrescent, but some people dont want google, and Accrescent is limited in apps (some more have appeared recently however!).

Personally, I want to use Obtanium, but i just prefer Droidify for its UI.
