Not receiving notifications from whatapp installed in work profile

Pixel 6a running up to date grapheneos. I installed Shelter and created a work profile. Within that work profile I installed whatsapp since unfortunately my work requires it. It works fine except I do not receive message notifications even though notifications are enabled, both for shelter (on main phone) and whatsapp (inside work profile's app settings).

It used to be the case that if you have not got Google Play Services installed in the profile you had to enable WhatsApps own push notification service in the settings in the app.

why do you need shelter?
you can just create a secondary profile and install whatsapp on it. on main profile you will see a notification saying you have whatsapp messages in the other profile.
imho shelter is redundant in pixels where you can have multiple/guest profiles.

For convenience. Some people don't like the time spent switching profiles.

Only if you enable the send notification to current user option in the profile settings.

Whatsapp doesn't need Play Services for notifications and at least for me (installed in main profile) I didn't have to change any setting to get it to use its own notifications.

Perhaps it needs unrestricted battery permission?

Yes it would need that to reliably deliver notifications.

If apps do not ask for it themselves the ability to grant unrestricted is now unfortunately a bit hidden. Have to go
to the app info page > App battery usage > tap on the 'Allow background usage' text rather than the toggle next to it and you get to another page with ability to set unrestricted
