Can't open Google maps links

Hi everyone - I'm having a strange issue with Google maps links, and I was wondering if anyone else has this problem, or whether someone can suggest a solution.

If I recieve a link to a particular location in Google maps, for example, in Signal or Whatsapp - when I try to click on it, I'm greeted with a little white loading indicator box in the center of the screen, and the entire phone because unresponsive, sometimes necessitating a reboot.

I tried running maps with exploit protection disabled, but it didn't make a difference. For context, I'm using a Pixel 6 Pro with the latest GrapheneOS release. I'm also using sandboxed play services.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

nyredsky9653 Has Google Maps always done this? I have not experienced this issue before, but the loading screen that you described does sound like the one I see when I use Google Maps.

Do you have Google Play installed? And does it have the network permission? Previously, Google Maps was relying on Google Play Services to work properly. I'm not sure if that's still the case.

You can also try clearing Google Maps' storage in Settings > Apps > All apps > Google Maps > Storage & cache then try again.

If it's still not working, maybe try reinstalling? Unsure how you installed it originally, but I'd try installing it using Google Play.

Figured out the issue! For anyone who might stumble on this thread in the future: i had installed MicroG on top of sandboxed play services (which I definitely don't recommend, unless you have a specific reason like I did). Basically, MicroG was causing the problem. It was opening the Google maps links, instead of allowing the links to be opened via sandboxed play services like normal. Once I went into the app settings for MicroG and prevented it from opening links by default, the issue went away.
