Android Auto disconnects few times before working

Hi folks,

I have recently upgraded to a Pixel 9 Pro XL with GrapheneOS. Prior to this I was using a Pixel 4 with stock OS.

I have a retrofit CarPlay/Android Auto unit I've installed in my Audi. It works absolutely fine with my Pixel 4 on stock OS as well as several other Android and iOS devices.

With my Pixel 9 on GOS, when my phone first connects to my car, it drops the connection after ~10 seconds. This sometimes happens once, sometimes 2 or 3 times. I have to toggle the Bluetooth on my phone off and on and then it eventually manages to maintain the connection without any issue. You can imagine this is frustrating if I have to travel somewhere in a rush but end up needing to spend several minutes trying to get it to stabilise.

What steps can I take to diagnose this issue?
I have gone through Sandboxed Google Play settings and granted all the permissions for Android Auto.

Is it perhaps possible to tell the car to use 2.4 GHz instead of 5 GHz? If not, is there a way to tell the car to use specific 5 GHz channels? There is some information in issue 3944 that might help if that is the cause of what you are seeing.

I can confirm switching to channel 149 on my unit appears to have fixed the issue… never seen it so stable before!
