name of caller/SMS sender does not show

Dear all,
we are using two Pixels 6a with GraphemeOS from AbovePhone.
On one phone, the telephone and message apps seem not to have access to the contacts / address book; although the contacts have correctly been copied over from the previous phone -- the names of the callers or senders of text messages (SMS) do not show. In the settings, access to the contacts / address book is granted to the telephone app. Contact Scopes is not enabled.
I compared the settings of our two identical phones, and cannot find any difference. Yet, one does show the callers' names, the other one consistently never does.
What could be going on here? We have had a lot of problems due to this lack of being able to tell who is calling / texting.

Is it known that what is on the phone is unmodified GrapheneOS?

A quick glance at the Above web site suggests they are charging a distinct premium for the devices, which is fine, but it also seems as if the web site indicates they provide some support to their users. Has that avenue been investigated?

I am not sure which alterations have been made by the vendor (AbovePhone).
Yes, I have been looking into Above's knowledge base (Wiki, videos).
The problem seems to be that there are possibly three accounts, the device itself, a WebDAV sync account, and in our case Telegram. Then there is also the SIM card where addresses can be stored. it seems not all of them are accessed by the contacts app, or not all of them are revealed to the telephone app.
This is quite confusing.
If there would be some tutorial which explains which contacts in which "account" are accessed and shared with other applications, that would be really helpful.
