I noticed that when I received my device, before flashing GrapheneOS, the slot was B.

After flashing GrapheneOS, the slot was now A.

Flash back to stock, slot is still A.

Flash back GrapheneOS, slot still A.

Just wondering, when does the slot change?

The Slot changes when your phone updates. The updates gets placed into the current unused slot of your phone, then the phone tries to reboot into the updated slot.

If successfully booted into the updated slot it keeps using them and uses the old slot for the next update.
If the reboot after update fails (I think a couple times) the phone boots back into the functioning system of the other slot and can try to update again.

Does flashing a new OS count as an 'update'?

Initially it did change from B to A, but has since stayed on A through two flashes between GrapheneOS, back to Stock and then back to GrapheneOS.

      Is this normal?

That I do not know. Someone more knowledgeable on the A/B topic might chime in.

This thread from January indicates that the GrapheneOS installer flashes both slots. I don't know whether Google's flasher does, or whether it flashes both slots in a subtly different fashion.
