Graphene not recognizing Apricorn Aegis

Hi,
I use an Apricorn Aegis 3NX flash drive. It has hardware encryption AES- 256, and is supposed to be cross-platform (Mac, Linux, Android).

This morning I placed an linux ISO & anaconda on the drive. And used it as an installation media to install QubesOS on my laptop.

There is still space on my Apricorn flash - so I hooked it to my Graphene OS to add some files.The drive was recognised but the phone wanted to format the drive.

Does anyone know why this is happening. I do not want to reformat the drive.

A drive needs to be formatted as FAT32 or ExFAT to be recognized. (ExFAT only supported in 6th gen and later). If it's not one of those two, it asks you to format it.

What about ext4? I thought AOSP recognized and preferred it (seeing as it's linux kernel)?

It is possible to build a Linux kernel with or without support for various file systems.

Meanwhile, Android external storage is not the same thing as internal storage. I haven't tried ext4 external devices on GrapheneOS, but here are resources suggesting that "it's a Linux" is not the whole story:
