Transfer files from USB drive to phone/tablet

I cannot work out how to transfer files from a USB stick into my GOS Pixel tablet (or Pixel 6a phone). The file transfer option in the USB connections settings is greyed out as are all the other options. The option to control the USB stick from "this device" cannot ever succeed. The port is set to "charging only when locked" though I have also tried "on - does not apply any restrictions".

I have used the USB c/a adapter that came with my pixel phone. I have tried two different USB sticks. My tablet or phone can see all the files on the USB stick and appears to get to around 70% transfer before telling me it cannot transfer the file. The files are either .flac or .mp3 music files.

Have I missed something? I'd rather not connect my tablet to my PC if I can avoid it.

You're supposed to just be able to access the contents of the usb drive as a removable media in file manager, without needing to mess with any kind of settings (as long as your usb-c port is set to allow data.)

If it fails partway through a file transfer, I would suspect a problem with the usb drive itself, or the adapter.

Okay thanks. I tried two different USB drives so it could be the adapter. I've had it for a while but never used it before today.
