Hi,
can anyone who uses Tuta and the option to sync contacts, confirm if it works well? Because I have issue and new contact add to my device does not sync in Tuta, only when I add the new contact from the Tuta app.

I have sync options in Tuta enabled, also with all permissions enabled . In default contacts app I have
only Google account , Device account but Tuta is missing ?
I thing Tuta account it should appear as well , when I try add the account manualy from + Add account > Select Tuta from the list > The contacts application sends me back to the previous screen but tuta is missing again, it does not enable Tuta.

I report this to Tuta but for now no the only answer I receive is to reinstall Tuta app and try again, or try to toggle sync option and enable again , but problem percist .

Any idea?

EDIT: I try both apps Fdroid - G Play

Thanks!

proclaim From my experience, the Tuta contacts sync only keeps the device in sync with it. It’s not a 2-way sync.
I tested this by adding “Test Contact” to my device and the new contact did not display in the Tuta app. The full Contacts permission for the Tuta app is allowed on my device (I.e., no contact scopes). This looks to me like the same behavior that you are seeing.

Did you import your contacts list into Tuta? If so, your Tuta account is in the GOS Contacts app, but it’s a bit convoluted. Tap on a contact on your device and then tap the 3-dot menu in the top right. An option “View linked contacts” should display (I don’t remember the exact wording). If you tap that, it will display duplicate contacts that are linked— one for ‘Device’ and one for ‘Device [your Tuta email account]’.

      Hi thanks,
I try to click in various contacts > three dots in top right corner > View Linked account - with all contacts that I have try I only get Device | Whatsapp my tuta account is missing .

I also think that with some of the latest updates, it was already possible 2-way sync .
I remember that when this option was released it was not available, then in the new version they enabled importing contacts from the app and 2-way sync if I am not wrong.

But in any case I don't see my Tuta account in the contacts app, and contacts linked to my tuta account.

        Reading FAQ:

Contact synchronization can be activated from Settings > Contacts > Contacts synchronization.

When you activate contact synchronization, your Tuta contacts will be synced with the contacts app you have on your phone. The Tuta app will then:

create a contacts list for the Tuta contacts on iOS
create a contacts account for them on Android
Updating your contacts in the Tuta app will update them in the phone's app and vice versa.

        Keep in mind:

If you make any changes to the contact using the phone's default app while Tuta is running in the background, the changes will only be synced upon your next login.
If you update a Tuta contact on a different device, like the web browser, the Tuta app will use the version of that contact which is on your phone and overwrite any updates.
Activating contact synchronization will not automatically import your phone's contacts to your Tuta account. If you would like to do that, please see How can I import contacts?

Currently only 1 way sync works : Tuta to contacts.

Tuta have said that they are still working on the 2nd way (contacts to tuta).

        So for now, you can:

        1. Import all of your phone contacts into tuta (using the import feature of the tuta app).
        2. to add a new contact, you have to first add it in tuta. It will then automatically be copied into the phone contacts.
        3. To edit a contact, you have to make the changes in the tuta app. They will then be copied to the phone contacts.

2 way sync should be comming soon.

This is, imho, the best free encrypted contacts sync we have today. Once the 2nd way sync is implemented it will be perfect. But as it is now it already works great -> you just have to make your contact changes in the tuta app for the time being.

proclaim I try to click in various contacts > three dots in top right corner > View Linked account - with all contacts that I have try I only get Device | Whatsapp my tuta account is missing .

Sorry, I may have confused things. Instead, try opening a device contact from GOS Contacts, then click the edit pencil. When I do this, I see ‘Device [my Tuta email]’ under the contact picture.

Hmm.. if this is true, then it may be an issue for Tuta. I’m on the latest app (updated just today w the new icon) and I don’t see updates made in the GOS Contacts app syncing to the Tuta app > Contacts tab.

proclaim But in any case I don't see my […] contacts linked to my tuta account.

If you have distinct contacts saved only in the Tuta app and you do not see them in the GOS Contacts app, the only suggestion I have would be to uninstall/reinstall the Tuta app and try again. They should be syncing to your device if Tuta contacts syncing is on and Contacts permission is enabled. I don’t have this issue so I’m sorry I can’t be of more help.

Editing any contact I have still missing Tuta account only Device.

I am going to try more things, also waiting for some feedback that might help from Tuta, I will post updates if this starts to work for me.

            Thanks

proclaim It's not your mistake. Tuta's communication has been pretty bad on this.

They have only clarified the situation on their reddit, but this isn't reflected on the website.

              5 days later

Today I receive this email from Tuta team.

              Quote:

It appears that contacts sync is currently only
possible with the Google Contacts app. The Stock Contacts app on GrapheneOS can probably see your Tuta contacts but cannot edit them or sync back to the phone.
I have informed our developers about this and they are looking into it. Sorry again for this misunderstanding.
              Best regards,

Full Contacts sync is back now !
Hi, after the latest Tuta update I see that my tuta account is back in contacts app . And now I can create/elimanate contacts directly .

I don't now if the fix ia going from the Tuta app or maybe receint system update . But the great news is that this works back again.

But make first an export of your contacts as vcard file!

Because the sync function isn't free of errors!
My address book was a mess after I had given Tuta the permission to link and sync my contacts.

Fortunately I had not given it to my Pixel 7 Pro, where I had the recent version of my address book.

But on my older iPhones and the Pixel 8 Pro Tuta has wasted my contacts data.

Thanks, yes is always good to fallow the golden rule to have backups.

proclaim wow proton should take a lesson from tuta for addressing bugs in a timely manner

Glad its working for you now.
